Size:
wingspread 2.75-3.5 in. Recognition: Very distinctive; large, creamy white and black; black bands cut through pale white wing with a thick black band running along outer edge of wings; small red crescent on inner corner of HW; long tail. Flight period: Adults fly from March to September. Hostplants: The larvae of the Pale Swallowtail feed on various Ceanothus species such as buckbrush, deerbrush, wild lilac, and blue blossom, along with other plants in the Rhamnaceae and Rosaceae. Habitat: Found in the hills, mountains, canyons, open woodlands, hilltops, and commonly along streams. Males hilltop to look for mates. Distribution: Found along the Pacific coast from Baja California to British Columbia.
