wingspread 1.9-2.5 in. Recognition: Variable in appearance; coastal populations are pale orange to orange with dark black vein markings; outlined spots along edge are cone-shaped; underside has silvered spots. Flight period: Adults active from April to September. Hostplants: The larval hostplants are violets (Viola - Violaceae). Habitat: This Fritillary can be found in lowland areas as well as higher elevation oak forests, hillsides and hilltops. Distribution: The Callippe Fritillary is found from British Columbia south to southern California. |
