     Phyciodes campestris
     Field Crescent

Size: wingspread 1-1.5 in.
Recognition: Upperside is brown and orange band and checker pattern; underside is yellow-tan with some discolorations.
Flight period: February to December.
Hostplants: Aster species such as A. hesperius, which grows near water.
Habitat: This Crescent (along with P. mylitta) prefer moist habitats that include fields and open areas in foothills, watercourses, and other moist settings.
Distribution: Patchy distribution over the Pacific West Coast. Fairly scarce in southern California and in Santa Barbara County.
