Size: wingspread 1 in.
Recognition: Upperside is dark gray with white fringes; underside is distinctly green; tailless.
Flight period: Adults are active from February to April.
Hostplants: The larvae feed on wild buckwheats (Eriogonum fasciculatum) and deerweed (Lotus scoparius).
Habitat: Found in forest and mountain settings, also canyons and hillsides.
Distribution: From the coastal Oregon mountains down the California coast, it flies through the mountains and forested areas of southern California. In the spring it can commonly be seen flying through the Sante Ynez mountains and backcounty of Santa Barbara County.
Other: Look for this colorful and festive butterfly starting around St.Patrick's Day.
