Size: Wingspread 1-1.75 in.
Recognition: Dark orange- brown; with 3-4 yellow spots diagonally across FW; HW with orange coloring; underside is purple-brown with faint yellow-orange spot band.
Flight period: Adults active April through September.
Hostplants: The larvae feed on a variety of grasses.
Habitat: This skipper prefers coastal lowlands, canyons, foothills, open spaces, parks, and grassy fields.
Distribution: Populations of the Umber Skipper in lowland California are disjunct from populations in north-central Mexico.
Other: The range of this skipper seems to be expanding progressively northward.
