Size: Wingspread 0.75-1 in.
Recognition: Orange with black borders, males with dark FW 'slash'; underside of male HW orange, that of female has orange-brown to purple.
Flight period: Adults of this skipper are active from May to July.
Hostplants: The larvae eat a variety of grasses.
Habitat: In mountain areas they are seen in clearings, especially near water and near forest edges.
Distribution: The Rural Skipper is almost entirely restricted to low to mid-elevation California (excluding the Central Valley), barely extending into Oregon and Baja California.
Other: These skippers are freqently found around California buckeye trees ( Aesculus californica), which they frequent for nectar and to find mates.
